National Federation of Spiritual Healers (UK)What is Spiritual Healing?

Healing energy is the universal energy for good that is available to all at every instant. If you believe in Jesus Christ, you will know that this is the energy He used in His ministry. If you are a follower of another faith, or none at all, you may know it as the power of Love, the Universal Life Force, or prana.

I am a member of the National Federation of Spiritual Healers in the UK, and received my training from them in the early 1980’s. Since then, Reiki has appeared on the scene, with its levels of proficiency, but it is essentially the same energy, if applied with a slightly different consciousness.

As Harry Edwards, the founder of The Healing Minute and one of the most important healers in the history of Spiritual Healing in Britain, explained: “There is one general healing process, but there is no one way to seek it. To try and adapt it to any one theology is wrong, for Spiritual Healing is God’s gift to all mankind irrespective of race, colour or creed.” He further points out that “healings only take place in accordance with the laws that govern us. For example, when a hand is amputated, we do not see a new one grown.” On the question of why there is disease and suffering in the world, Harry Edwards had this to say: “God does not wish anyone to suffer the evil of disease, such is not His doing, but arises from our transgressing the laws of health….It is now accepted that the major part of our adversities is the product of soul and mind dis-harmony. We progress spiritually by consciously overcoming these, they are not just wiped off the slate….There is much more reason in this progressive change for us to realise our weaknesses than to pray for God to automatically change us into better people, for there is no strength in that – and no spiritual profit.” Quoted from The Healing Intelligence by Harry Edwards (1965) Reprinted in “The Spiritual Healer” The Magazine of the Harry Edwards Healing Sanctuary (founded 1946), February 2006.

How can we use Spiritual Healing in our work together?

Spiritual Healing is extremely calming and strengthening. I will often offer some at the end of a counselling session, if our work has been particularly intense. Or occasionally you may arrive for a session in a state of turmoil, for which Spiritual Healing is an immediate antidote. Depending on your needs, you may want a session dedicated entirely to healing. On these occasions, I like to begin by having you voice your immediate concerns, to help you begin to centre yourself and come into the present. The healing session would very likely include some breathing work as well, to assist you in caring for yourself.

Healing in our sessions is usually done with you sitting on the footstool of the client chair, but can occasionally be done with you lying on the treatment table. After you are settled on either the stool or the table, I begin by standing behind you with my hands just above your head, attuning us both to the cosmic healing forces. I then move my hands to different parts of your body, generally remaining a few inches off the body, but occasionally making physical contact with your shoulders, chest, belly, throat, neck, arms, back, hips, knees, feet and hands, face or head. If there is an area that is particularly sensitive that you do not want physically touched, be sure to let me know.
