Ellen Bass & Laura Davis\u00a0The Courage to Heal<\/a> 1988 \u2013 A validating guide for anyone recovering from sexual abuse.<\/p>\n

Melanie Beattie Codependent No More: How to Stop Controlling Others and Start Caring for Yourself<\/a> 1989 \u2013 A very helpful guide to the psychology and practice of self-care.<\/p>\n

Eric Berne\u00a0Games People Play<\/a> 1964 \u2013 A psychological explanation of every-day behaviour. Definitely an \u201cah ha\u201d moment in early self-discovery. An easy and amusing read, but with very deep implications.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Davis Kasl\u00a0Women, Sex and Addiction<\/a> 1989 \u2013 Kasl is a sensitive skilled therapist, and I recommend this book to everyone living in the 21st century western world.<\/p>\n

Annie Dillard\u00a0Pilgrim at Tinker Creek<\/a> 1974 \u2013 an American woman experiences living close to nature.<\/p>\n

Colette Dowling\u00a0The Cinderella Complex<\/a> 1981 \u2013 A little paperback which explained to me that it is those small inconsistencies in our behaviour that can lead us to our core issues still waiting to be resolved.<\/p>\n

R. D. Laing\u00a0The Politics of the Family<\/a> 1969 \u2013 Laing was a pioneer who had a revolutionary humanistic approach to psychiatric hospital care. His explanation of family dynamics is also liberating.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Mary Austin\u00a0Acupuncture Therapy<\/a> 1974 \u2013\u00a0An excellent acupuncture reference, to help understand a variety of aches and pains via the meridian pathways.<\/p>\n

Dr. Edward Bach\u00a0Heal Thyself<\/a> 1931 \u2013\u00a0Spiritual beliefs concerning healing by the discoverer of the Bach Flower Remedies.<\/p>\n

Ruth Bircher\u00a0Eating Your Way to Health<\/a> 1961 \u2013 A \u2018healthy eating\u2019 book from a clinic in Switzerland, with valuable advice and recipes.<\/p>\n

Boston Women\u2019s Health Book Collective Our Bodies, Ourselves<\/a> 1970 \u2013 A good beginning self-help guide.<\/p>\n

W.H.M. Carrington Balance as a Function of Intelligence<\/a> 1970 \u2013 Trained in the Alexander Technique by F. Matthais Alexander, Walter Carrington explains that posture is fundamental to our health and well-being and can only be maintained by using our intelligence.<\/p>\n

Nicholas Culpeper Culpeper\u2019s Complete Herbal<\/a> 1653\/1854\/2019 \u2013 The basic herbal reference for every library.<\/p>\n

Scott Cunningham Magical Aromatherapy<\/a> 1989 \u2013 Scott Cunningham was a magical adept and a scholar. His work combines health and magic in the best possible way.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Goldman and Andi Goldman The Humming Effect: Sound Healing for Health and Happiness<\/a>\u00a02017 \u2013 A more recent publication, sent to me by a friend in Paris when I was looking for exercises to calm my vagus nerve, this book is an excellent validation of the importance of humming for calming the mind and body and lifting the spirit.<\/p>\n

Kathy Henderson, Frankie Armstrong and Sandra Kerr My Song is My Own<\/a> 1979 \u2013 Voice work is a very important part of being in your body, and work with Frankie Armstrong is inspiring. This collection of 100 traditional and women\u2019s songs from the British Isles is an excellent resource to encourage you to lift your voice in song.<\/p>\n

W.J Kilner\u00a0The Aura<\/a> 1911 \u2013 A physician and surgeon and one of the early researchers on the aura, Kilner\u2019s work is a classic in the field. Understandable with helpful illustrations, we can understand the energy bodies that surround our physical selves.<\/p>\n

Michio Kushi\u00a0Oriental Diagnosis<\/a> 1977 \u2013 Kushi, a student of George Ohsawa the founder of macrobiotics, tells us how to read a person\u2019s life in their face and what dietary changes they need to make in order heal. Helpful when considering food as medicine.<\/p>\n

Gay Gaer Luce\u00a0Body Time<\/a> 1971 \u2013 Bio-rhythms and what they mean to your way of life. With a very extensive bibliography.<\/p>\n

Yogi Ramacharaka\u00a0The Hindu-Yogi Science of Breath<\/a> 1960 \u2013 Breath is life but how often we forget. This book is a valuable reminder of how to breathe to stay sane, grounded, and healthy.<\/p>\n

Robert B. Tisserand\u00a0The Art of Aromatherapy<\/a> 1977 \u2013 Aromatherapy is a powerful healing tool. Tisserand is one of the world-recognised experts. A good reference book to have in your library.<\/p>\n

Aubrey T. Westlake\u00a0Pattern of Health<\/a> 1961 \u2013 A discussion of some fundamental approaches to energy medicine including Bach Flower Remedies, homeopathy, the work of Reich, Hawaiian Huna, and the healing miracles of Christ.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Part III: The Self that is the Mind<\/h3>\n

Annie Besant\u00a0Thought Power<\/a> 1912 \u2013 One of the outstanding books by a member of the Theosophical Society explaining the importance of developing mental self-control and ways to approach this discipline.<\/p>\n

Louise Hay\u00a0Heal Your Body<\/a> 1976 \u2013 A once-popular little handbook, Hay associates body parts with emotional blockages and gives affirmations to clear them.<\/p>\n

Eugen Herrigel\u00a0Zen in the Art of Archery<\/a> 1953 \u2013 An explanation for western minds about how to put meditation into practice in everyday life.<\/p>\n

Sybil Leek\u00a0Moon Signs<\/a> 1977 \u2013 This book gives much-needed attention to an often neglected planet in our charts.<\/p>\n

A.T. Mann\u00a0The Round Art: The Astrology of Time and Space<\/a> 1979 \u2013 A global look at astrology, an excellent overall reference.<\/p>\n

Catherine Ponder\u00a0Dynamic Laws of Healing<\/a> 1966 \u2013 With body maps and affirmations, Ponder reminds us that you co-create our own health. I find her affirmation of \u201cdivine order\u201d to be reliably effective.<\/p>\n

Jane Roberts\u00a0The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book<\/a> 1974 \u2013 A long book with one message: your thoughts shape your life. I finally realised the importance of paying attention to the expectations I was setting for myself and at last began to notice my thoughts.<\/p>\n

Aeschelus\u00a0The Oresteian Trilogy<\/a> 458 BCE \u2013 A trilogy of plays illustrating the transition from matriarchal society to our present blood-thirsty patriarchy.<\/p>\n

Samuel Beckett\u00a0Waiting for Godot<\/a> 1953 \u2013 A classic play about finding, or not, consciously or not, one\u2019s spiritual path in life.<\/p>\n

Mary Daly Beyond God the Father<\/a> 1973 \u2013 The title says it all; a book that encourages radical thinking about spirituality and practice.<\/p>\n

Mary Daly Gyn\/Ecology: The Metaethics of Radical Feminism<\/a> 1978 \u2013 An examination of the practices of patriarchy and how they operate to control women for the advantage of all men.<\/p>\n

Simone de Beauvoir The Second Sex<\/a> 1971 \u2013 A foundational text for feminism, absolutely groundbreaking when first published in French in 1949, this book provides a womanist standpoint from which to view history, present day practices, and future possibilities.<\/p>\n

Bob Dylan\u00a0Blowing in the Wind<\/a> (song) 1963 \u2013 An early hippie classic, this song can tell us about the unity of politics and ecology, and the relationship between human culture and our true needs. If only more of us knew how to listen to the wind.<\/p>\n

Lawrence Ferlinghetti\u00a0The World is a Beautiful Place<\/a> 1968 \u2013 A San Francisco poet, Ferlinghetti presents life as it really is, with all its beauty and absurdity.<\/p>\n

Robert Frost\u00a0The Road Not Taken<\/a> 1916 \u2013 A brilliant poem about life\u2019s fundamental choices by one of America\u2019s foremost poets.<\/p>\n

Robert Graves\u00a0The Greek Myths<\/a> Volumes I & II \u2013 The psychic heritage of our Western culture, the source of archetypes and more.<\/p>\n

Marge Piercy\u00a0Woman on the Edge of Time<\/a> 1976 \u2013 A feminist science fiction novel about surviving life in a mental hospital. I found it very inspiring and was encouraged to carry on.<\/p>\n

Sylvia Plath\u00a0The Bell Jar<\/a> 1963 \u2013 Plath ultimately committed suicide, some say driven mad by the professional jealously of her husband Ted Hughes. This book beautifully describes her anguish, and some of her processes as a writer.<\/p>\n

Stevie Smith\u00a0not waving but drowning<\/a>\u00a01957 -\u00a0Another poem about reality and appearances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Richard Cavendish\u00a0A History of Magic<\/a>\u00a01977 -\u00a0a scholarly explanation of the historical development of magic.<\/p>\n

Fritjof Capra The Tao of Physics<\/a> 1975 \u2013 As Einstein discovered, physics and spirituality both reveal the same truths. Capra explains this in terms that are understandable.<\/p>\n

Marie-Louise von Franz\u00a0Time: Rhythm and Repose<\/a> 1978 \u2013 A Jungian analyst who worked directly with Jung, von Franz explains the function of time for the psyche.<\/p>\n

Martin Johnson\u00a0Time, Knowledge and the Nebulae<\/a> 1945 \u2013 An early and very scholarly explanation of how time and space are different aspects of each other.<\/p>\n

Arthur Koestler\u00a0The Roots of Coincidence<\/a> 1972 \u2013 A famous novelist explores the possible explanations for psychic connections between all events.<\/p>\n

G. R. Levy\u00a0The Gate of Horn: religious conceptions of the Stone Age and their influence upon European Thought<\/a>\u00a01946 -\u00a0A beautifully illustrated archaeology book by a sensitive explorer.<\/p>\n

Sheila Ostrander & Lynn Schroeder\u00a0Psychic Discoveries Behind the Iron Curtain<\/a> 1970 \u2013 Two Canadians went behind the Iron Curtain to study Soviet experiments with the paranormal, at a time when the West would not admit to exploring it (though the US Navy was doing some similar things at the time).<\/p>\n

P.D. Ouspensky In Search of the Miraculous<\/a> 1949 \u2013 A follower of the mystic and spiritual teacher Gurdijeff, describing his time with Gurdjieff and the master\u2019s teachings.<\/p>\n

Louis Pauwels & Jacques Bergier\u00a0The Morning of the Magicians<\/a> 1960 \u2013 Two Nobel scientists consider magic, science and history.<\/p>\n

Gary Zukov The Dancing Wu Li Masters<\/a> 1980 \u2013 Zukov takes Capra\u2019s work further and shows us the unity of all life from a scientific point of view. Popular writing, easy to read.<\/p>\n

Ram Dass\u00a0Be Here Now<\/a> 1971 \u2013 With lots of great close-up photos of the miracles of nature, this book reminds us that the present moment is all we have.<\/p>\n

Reclaim the Earth: Women Speak Out for Life on Earth<\/a> 1983 \u2013 Eds: Leonie Caldecott and Stephanie Leland. A collection of essays by women concerned about the future of our planet.<\/p>\n

Lawrence D Hills\u00a0Organic Gardening<\/a> 1977 -\u00a0This book taught me about organic gardening, which taught me a lot about life.<\/p>\n

Merlin Sheldrake Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds<\/a> 2023 \u2013 A recent publication by the son of a voice teacher specialising in overtone chanting and the creator of the concept of morphic resonance, this book is uplifting and inspiring, giving hope for the future of our planet.<\/p>\n
