What are Visualisations?

Visualisations are the pictures we see in our minds, the ones we create for ourselves. Most of us unconsciously create negative visualisations for ourselves – poverty, illness, isolation, etc, etc. Recent medical studies particularly with cancer patients and depressed people have found that the conscious creation of positive pictures helps us to regain and maintain health. Moreover, ancient metaphysical traditions have always taught that holding a clear vision of what you want to happen is the first step to welcoming it into your life.

Of course, there are some natural limits to the capacity for manifestation, which is referred to as “the sphere of availability.” So although, as my friend Grace says, “nothing is too difficult for Jesus” and miracles are certainly possible, in general what we are able to manifest is determined by the energy field we inhabit. Thus the role of visualisations is to expand, brighten and energise that field. You must accept the responsibility of being a co-creator of your life, and in doing so you enable your true potential to manifest in its most loving and creative form.

I firmly believe that form follows thought, and in that sense we do create our own reality. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy to a greater extent that most of us credit, and by taking responsibility for our visions of our life, we can help ourselves arrive in the reality we seek.

Guided visualisations are often confused with meditation, which they are not. But they are a useful practice of mind-development, helping us to consciously learn to see positive pictures. Learning to interpret the images that spontaneously appear in visualisations gives us keys to the language of our psyche, and can help to develop our intuitive powers. Regular visualisation is also a good companion practice to repeating affirmations.

How can we use Visualisations in our work together?

Visualisation can provide a starting-point for a number of different approaches to your change process. Many of the relaxation and self-healing techniques I use with you involve your ‘inner vision’ – seeing with your inner eye, or just using your imagination. It doesn’t matter if you “really see” the various things or if you are only “making them up” – the theory is that it is all ‘material’ arising from your psyche and is therefore relevant to our work. Even evoking memories involves a kind of visualisation, because you “see” the scenes again in your mind. So there is no need to worry about whether you can “do visualisations” or not – some part of you will respond to the suggestions made, and you will get results.

Depending on what we are doing, I may ask you to see various colours or lights within various parts of your body. Filling yourself with golden light is a fundamental healing exercise, and chakra cleansing can also be done with colour and light visualisations. At other times we may do a classic “Guided Visualisation” when, for example, I talk you through an imaginary journey in a wood or along a beach to bring back messages from certain of your inner archetypes. Dream work can be done by re-entering a dream at a key point, and ‘watching’ the dream develop in response to particular questions. In the final years of our work together, you can reach your higher mental or spiritual awareness with certain consciously directed visualisation exercises. Even from the very beginning of our work together, we can access your higher astral Self by doing crystal visualisations, and we can get information from your psychic double about your health challenges by you imagining yourself getting very small and entering your own body to have a look around. There are any numbers of possibilities, and I select the approach that is appropriate as your process of personal transformation reveals itself to us.

I can also offer you one of several cassettes I recorded some years ago which provide a variety of visualisation exercises.
